Today, we can get food delivered(运送) to our homes easily. But this is not a new idea. Food delivery started a long time ago in China.
The Han Dynasty: the beginning
Food delivery first started in the Han Dynasty. At that time, only very important people could use the service.
The Song Dynasty: becoming popular
Food delivery became popular in the Song Dynasty. The book *A Dream of Splendor* tells us that the city of Bianjing (now Kaifeng in Henan) had many kinds of food. People often ordered(订购) food and other things from shops or restaurants.
How did people order food?
There were no phones in the old days. So people had to go to the restaurant themselves, or they sent another man to order for them. Then, the restaurant would deliver the food. The delivery man was called "xianhan".
How did they keep food warm?
Cooks were very smart. They made a special dish called "wenpan" to keep food warm. There was some space(空间) in the middle. They put hot water into the space to keep the food warm.
