In May, 2025, Xuanya Bookshop opened inside the Mianhua Tiankeng Scenic Area (景区), Hechi, Guangxi. It’s special. It is in the wall of a 326-metre-deep sinkhole (落水洞).
At night, lights shine on more than 10,000 books along the cliff (悬崖). The bookshop looks like a “knowledge (知识) canyon (峡谷)”. *Visitors need to walk over 1,000 steps to get there. The bookshop never gets wet, even in heavy wind and rain. The sinkhole protects it well.
This project helps the local tourism a lot. Before, Mianhua Village was short of water. And it was not easy to get there. Villagers left the village to work in other places. But now, many villagers come back to open homestays and restaurants. The scenic area also has a pool, a hotel and a cafe. It has welcomed over 100,000 visitors and become a very popular place.
