A few months ago, I read a book. 1 So I started cleaning out my house and got a lot of things I didn't need. And then I thought about what to do with them.
This made me think of a kind of special sale for orphans(孤儿). It helps people clean out their houses and turn things into money to help homeless children all over the world. 2 So I asked my boys for help, and they loved the idea of helping others.
They walked from door to door to ask the neighbours for the things they didn't need. 3 At last, however, we had ten boxes full of different things. Then it was time for the yard sale.
Although we had ads in newspapers and online, I was still not sure whether anyone would come. 4 I planned to get 400 to 500 that day. Finally we got 768.12! We sent the money to the poor children in Haiti. Thanks for all the people who have helped us.
5 I think everyone should try his or her best to help those in need.

A. I wanted to learn from it.
B. To our surprise, so many people came to our yard sale.
C. At first, I wondered if we were able to fill a box or two.
D. This book is so interesting that I read it again and again.

答案

1.F 根据空格前的“I read a book”可知作者读到一本书,从空格后的“So I started cleaning out ... I didn't need.”
2.A 根据空格前面的“It helps people clean ... all over the world.”可知这个义卖是将房子中的东西变成钱来帮助孤儿,从空格后的“So I asked my boys for help ... helping others.” 故选A。
3.C 根据空格后面的“At last, however, we had ten boxes full of different things.”
4.B 根据空格前面的“I was still not sure whether anyone would come”可知作者不确定是否有人会来,从空格后面的“Finally we got 768.12!”
5.E 根据空格后的“I think everyone should try his or her best to help those in need.”

A student reporter(SP) from New Star Weekly is having an interview with Tina about helping others.
SP: Hi, Tina! I heard you did something amazing. Can you tell me about it?
Tina: Sure! It all started when I was at the grocery store(杂货店) with my dad. We saw an elderly lady trying hard to move her groceries, and we offered to help her carry them to her car. That's when I got the idea of helping more people like her.
SP: That's really kind of you! What did you do next?
Tina: After that, my dad and I shared our phone numbers with some elderly neighbours. We told them they could give us their shopping lists, and we would buy their groceries. This way, they would reduce the risk(降低风险) of visiting the stores and carrying the heavy bags all the way back home.
SP: Wow, that's a great idea! Did more people join in it?
Tina: Yes! My dad even made an online group to find more volunteers. Pretty soon, lots of people wanted to help, and that's how the Good Neighbour Project started. Now, there are over 6,000 people helping in different cities.
SP: How does the Good Neighbour Project work?
Tina: It's simple. People who need help with their groceries, like the disabled or the elderly with difficulty in moving around, can call the Good Neighbour Hotline. We connect(联系) them with a volunteer who buys their groceries and takes them for free. They only pay for the groceries, not for the delivery.
SP: That's amazing, Tina! Any final thoughts?
Tina: I just think if you see someone who needs help, you should go for it. Kindness doesn't take much, but it can have a huge influence(影响)!
