Having Trouble Learning
At times, learning anything new can be very difficult. Some children have the added trouble of not seeing words or numbers in the right way. This can make schoolwork seem not just difficult but impossible.
The first people to notice a learning problem are usually parents. They can see that something is not right and try to find out what the problem may be. There are many different types of learning problems, but usually a learning problem comes from a person's brain being wired differently. Although some say that people with a learning problem are slow, this is not true. A child with a learning problem is often just as smart as other children, but because of the different way the child's brain joins things together, it makes learning something new much harder for that child.
Albert Einstein could not read anything until he was nine years old. Walt Disney and many other scientists and artists had trouble reading their whole lives, but that did not stop them from doing great things. Doctors guess that as many as $15\%$ of people have some kind of learning problem.
A lot of people with learning problems have a problem in their brains that makes words, numbers, and letters look all mixed up. A child with this problem can look at a word or Maths question written down by a teacher or in a book, but the child may not see the same thing as others see. The words or letters may be backwards or out of order. You can imagine how difficult it would be to read or do Maths with all the numbers or letters mixed up all the time.
Children with learning problems can do well in school. It is up to the parents, teachers and other helpers in schools to notice and treat learning problems as early as possible. They can do this by using special tests to see exactly what the problem is. Then they will know how to help the child. Many children with learning problems can become average or above average students when given the right tools to help themselves.
Before a child with a learning problem is tested, he or she might have a lot of trouble in school. The child may even want to quit school. That is why it is so important to catch the problem as early as possible.
1. The word “wired” in Paragraph 2 probably means “
A. shown

A. To prove learning problems are very common among scientists.
B. To discuss how learning problems cause difficulties in reading.
C. To show people with learning problems can still be successful.

Ⅰ. 1.D 2.C 3.A 4.D
根据画线词下文“but because of the different way the child's brain joins things together, it makes learning something new much harder for that child”可知,学习障碍通常是因为大脑连接信息的方式不同。“wired”在这里表示“连接”之意,对应选项 D“joined”。故选 D。
知识拓展 join 作动词时,除了可以表示“参加;加入(组织、团体等)”,还可以表示:
1.“连接;结合”。例如,在描述物体的物理连接时,可以说:“The plumber used a pipe to join the two water tanks.” 也可用于抽象的事物,例如:“We should join our efforts to solve this difficult problem.”
例如:“Let's join each other at the entrance of the park.”
例如:“In set theory, we join two sets to form a new set.”
根据“Albert Einstein could not read anything until he was nine years old. Walt Disney and many other scientists and artists had trouble reading their whole lives, but that did not stop them from doing great things.”
根据“but usually a learning problem comes from a person's brain being wired differently”可知,学习障碍通常是因为大脑接收信息的方式不同,而不是智力问题。故选 A。
根据最后一段“That is why it is so important to catch the problem as early as possible.”
Task: Don't give up and use all the resources to overcome difficulties.(答案不唯一,言之有理即可)
