Wednesday/Week 15
n 24 April, the Hubble Space Telescope celebrated its 35th birthday. It was sent into space in 1990 and since then it has made 1.6 million observations(观测).

Hubble orbits (沿轨道运行) Earth 320 miles above the surface. *Observations made by telescopes on Earth aren't always very clear because the atmosphere (大气) gets in the way, affecting the light from far-off objects. Hubble is above the atmosphere, so it can get clearer photos.

Over the last 35 years, the telescope has helped space scientists learn more about the universe (宇宙). It's named after Edwin Hubble, an astronomer who discovered that the universe is always getting bigger. Scientists used the telescope to look at how fast this is happening. They also found out that the universe is 13.8 billion years old.
Hubble also helped prove that there are very big black holes in the center of galaxies (银河系). It took a photo of the Eagle Nebula, a place where new stars are born. The photo, called Pillars of Creation showed how stars form in great detail. Another famous photo is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. It shows around 10,000 galaxies. To take it, Hubble watched the same area of sky for one million seconds.
Hubble is still working well. NASA says it expects the telescope to stay in space for the rest of the 2020s and into the 2030s。
