Long long ago, there lived a king named Midas. He loved gold more than anything in the world. He even gave his daughter the name Marigold( marigold 意为“金盏花”), after the golden flower.
One day, he met a kind old man. The old man asked, “Do you have a wish? I can make it come true.” “I wish to have a golden touch to turn everything I touch into gold!” Midas shouted.
Then the wish came true. Midas was overjoyed(狂喜的). He touched a table. It turned to gold. He touched a chair. It became gold, too.
But soon, he felt hungry. When he tried to eat, his food turned into gold. Then his daughter Marigold ran to him. He hugged her. Soon Marigold turned into a golden statue(雕像)!
Midas cried and begged(恳求), “I want my food back, and most of all, I want my daughter back! How much gold do you want? I can give you everything!” The old man smiled and said, “It costs nothing. Just remember, gold isn’t everything.”
