B
We all know sleep is good for health. But did you know it can also help you learn a new language? A study says our brain works during sleep to make our memories better.
In the study, 35 English speakers learned “Mini Pinyin”—a language based on Chinese but with English-like grammar. Half of them learned it in the morning, stayed awake, and took a test that day. The other half learned it in the evening, slept in a lab, and took the test the next morning. What is the result? People who slept after learning remembered much more than those who didn’t.
When we sleep, our brain has two main terms. One is REM sleep: it starts about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Our brain is very active then, and we often dream. The other is non-REM sleep: our brain is less active, but it sorts and saves new information. This thanks to two kinds of brain waves(脑电波). They can move new things from short-term memory to long-term memory.
Scott Cousens, who worked on the study, said, “Sleep isn’t just rest—it helps the brain keep difficult things like a new language, and lets the brain change and grow.” So, if you want to improve your English skills, the secret might be going to bed after learning!
1. Who did better in the study?

People who slept after learning remembered much more than those who didn't."
One is REM sleep: it starts about 90 minutes after falling asleep. Our brain is very active then, and we often dream."
This thanks to two kinds of brain waves."
Sleep isn't just rest—it helps the brain keep difficult things like a new language, and lets the brain change and grow."
