The Dongming grain picture gets its name from Dongming county in Heze, Shandong Province, which has a history of over 1,700 years. This kind of art form was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in 2016.
Han Guorui, a folk artist, who is famous for making Dongming grain pictures, is generally busy collecting materials for his work in autumn. This year, he is much busier. He attends fairs, shares his skills and encourages more people to learn about grain art.
After being treated to protect against decay(腐烂) and insect infestation(蛀), the grains, grass and vegetable seeds are glued together to form a picture.
“We use the different shapes and colors of grains and seeds, which are all collected from the field,” says Han. His pictures drew many children’s attention. They kept on asking questions, such as “Will these seeds grow?” “Can these grains be eaten?”
Han answered the children’s questions while showing them how to use grains and seeds to make a picture.
“Only now, when food is enough, can people make a picture with the extra grain,” he says.
To make pictures enjoyed by more people, Han works in the style of Chinese ink and Western oil paintings. Now his grain pictures are not only sold in cities across China, but also in foreign markets.
“Grain pictures have become a cultural product that helps farmers live a better life,” says Han.
