During the Spring Festival, people eat some food with special meaning. Dumplings, fish and niangao are delicious. Most people like to eat them.
People in northern(北方的) China love to eat dumplings on New Year’s Eve. Dumplings look like ancient silver ingots(银锭). People believe that the more dumplings you eat, the more wealth you will have in the coming year.
In Chinese, the Chinese word for “fish” sounds like “yu”. It means “surplus(剩余)”. Chinese people always like to have a surplus at the end of the year.
Niangao is a kind of lucky food. In Chinese “gao” sounds like the Chinese word for “tall”. Eating niangao means you hope you will earn(赚得) more money and get a better job in the new year.
