[2026原创]Grasslands are large, open areas of land covered mainly with grass instead of trees. They are very important natural environments, where plants and animals live together. They cover about one-fourth of all the land on earth. In fact, the only continent that does not have any grasslands is Antarctica.
There are two main types. Temperate grasslands, like the prairies (大草原) of North America, are found in cooler places. Tropical grasslands, often called savannas, are located closer to the equator where it is warmer. To be healthy, grasslands need a climate with plenty of sunshine and some rain.
Many different kinds of animals make their homes in these places. On the American prairies, prairie dogs dig underground homes to escape the heat and other animals that hunt them. In Africa’s savanna, large animals like elephants, zebras, and lions must all share the limited water. South America’s grasslands are home to the rhea, the largest bird on the continent. Australian savannas are home to many marsupials, like kangaroos.
Today, however, many grasslands are in danger. They face serious problems because of human activities. Huge areas have been turned into farmland for growing crops or raising cattle. The growth of cities and climate change also damage these areas, sometimes causing long periods without rain. To protect them, scientists are working with ranchers (牧场主) to find better ways to use the land. They want to manage it in a way that keeps it healthy for many years. By working together, they can help stop the soil from being destroyed and save these very important natural places for the future.
