stronaut John McFall was allowed to
become the first disabled person to go
to the International Space Station (ISS).
He's now waiting to go on a mission.
McFall lost his right leg

in an accident when he was
younger. He has a prosthesis
(假体) and is helping the European Space Agency (ESA)
with a study to test if it is possible to send an astronaut
with a disability to space. He said that he was "very
proud" when doctors said he could go to space "because
it's never been done before".
When astronauts are in space, they have to do
exercise because the reduced gravity (重力) can
cause bone and muscle loss (骨骼和肌肉流失). *Part
of McFall's training includes testing prostheses in
microgravity (微重力) conditions—like that on the ISS,
where astronauts float (飘浮) because of the reduced
gravity. The tests checked which prostheses worked best
for exercising in space. McFall said he also talked to other
astronauts about exercise. "We're always exchanging
stories," he said.
