Lulu, an international student from France, first came to Beijing in 2020. She quickly fell in love with the city and found her hobby—Beijing Opera.
Lulu first saw Beijing Opera at an opera museum. “I found it really noisy at the beginning,” she laughed. “The strange music and colourful clothes confused me.” But as the show went on, something began to change. She began to notice the actors' body movements and their special facial make-up. “The make-up wasn't beautiful, but it seemed to tell secret stories. It really made me want to learn more about this art form.”
With great interest, she joined the Beijing Opera club. It made her understand that Beijing Opera is much more than just looks. “There is a really, really huge cultural and historical background behind Beijing Opera.”
The club meets for practice on Wednesdays and Fridays. Most of the members are international students. The teachers usually share stories behind the opera to help them understand, then teach them the basic movements and singing skills. The biggest problem for Lulu was learning the traditional Chinese singing style. “At first, my throat was in a lot of pain because I was using my voice in the wrong way,” she said. But with the help of the teachers, she has improved a lot.
Last spring, she performed a famous opera—The Romance of the Western Chamber and received cheers from both her Chinese and foreign classmates. When asked about her future plans, Lulu's eyes lit up, “I really love Beijing Opera. I hope to share my love of Beijing Opera with more people around the world.”
