C
When a woman took the seat beside me on a plane, I felt uncomfortable. She had to lower herself slowly, trying her best to fit into the small space.
“My name is Kelly. I’m from Canada. Where are you from?” she said as she waved to me.
“China,” I said as I shook her hand reluctantly(不情愿地). Kelly kept talking with me. She was very kind. When we were served drinks and meals, she made sure that I had enough room in my seat.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable with my elephantine size!” she said sincerely. I couldn’t help but let down my guard(戒备).
As we talked, I was surprised by her words. She had read many books and was really smart. I asked her, “Have you ever thought about losing some weight?” “Aren’t you worried about health problems because of being overweight?”
“Not at all. I eat healthily and often do sports,” she said. “I believe in my heart that people with illnesses tend(倾向于)to worry. You see advertisements from exercise centres that read, ‘Free yourself from your extra baggage, so you are free to be yourself.’ You’re free only if you’re comfortable with who you are!”
I suddenly understood that Kelly was the most beautiful and clever woman I had ever met in my life.

答案

31. B 根据“She had to lower herself slowly, trying her best to fit into the small space.”
32. C 根据“Kelly kept talking with me. She was very kind.”及“...she said sincerely. I couldn’t help but let down my guard.”
Free yourself from your extra baggage及上下文关于体重、健身的话题可知,extra baggage在此比喻“多余的体重”。故选B。
34. A 根据“I believe in my heart that people with illnesses tend to worry.” 故选A。
