Special Names for Old Ages in China
In China, there are special names for different ages of the elderly. These names come from old stories, poems and traditions. When an old person has a birthday, the family gets together to celebrate.
60 years old—Huajia
When a person turns 60, it is called “Huajia”. Long ago, people considered 60 years to be one complete(完整的) cycle in the traditional Chinese calendar. A 60th birthday is a big celebration.
70 years old—Guxi
When a person turns 70, it is called “Guxi”. This name comes from an old poem by Du Fu. The poem says, “People who live to 70 are rare(稀少的) since ancient times.” So “Guxi” means “rare in ancient times”.
80 to 90 years old—Maodie
When a person turns 80, it is often referred to as part of “Maodie”, a term generally used for people aged 80 to 90. It means “very old”. An 80-year-old person is also called “Zhangchao”.
No matter what the age is, the best gift for the elderly is not money or nice things. It is family reunion. When children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren come home, the old people feel truly happy.
