Then came the night of the first falling star. Denning, our greatest astronomer, said that the height of its first appearance was about ninety or one hundred miles.
I was at home at the time and writing in my study. The curtain was up. If I had looked up, I would have seen the strangest thing that ever came to the earth from outer space. Many people saw it, and simply thought that another meteorite had fallen. Nobody went to look for the fallen star that night.
Poor Ogilvy had seen it fall. So he got up very early with the idea of finding it. He did find it, soon after dawn. A huge hole had been made and the sand and gravel had been thrown violently in every direction, forming piles that could be seen a mile and a half away.
The Thing itself lay almost completely buried in sand. The uncovered part looked like a huge cylinder. It was covered with a thick burnt skin, which softened its edges. He went near it, surprised at the size and even more surprised at the shape, since most meteorites are very round. It was, however, still very hot from its flight through the air and he could not get close to it. He could hear movement from the inside but thought this was because of its cooling down. He did not imagine that it might be hollow.
He remained standing on one side of the pit that the Thing had made for itself, looking at its strange appearance. He was alone on the common.
Then suddenly, he noticed that some of the burnt skin was falling off the round edge of the

end. A large piece suddenly came off with a sharp noise that brought his heart into his mouth. For a minute he hardly realized what this meant, and although the heat was excessive, he climbed down into the pit to see the Thing more clearly. He realized that, very slowly, the round top of the cylinder was turning.
Even then he hardly understood what was happening, until he heard another sound and saw the black mark jump forwards a little. Then he suddenly understood. In fact, the cylinder was artificial! Something inside the cylinder was opening the top!
“Good heavens!” said Ogilvy. “There’s a man in it—man in it! Half burnt to death! Trying to find a way out!” At once, thinking quickly, he connected the Thing with ▲.

答案

B
由第二段中“I was at home at the time and writing in my study ... I would have seen the strangest thing that ever came to the earth from outer space ... simply thought that another meteorite had fallen.”
由第四段中“The uncovered part looked like a huge cylinder ... It was, however, still very hot from its flight through the air and he could not get close to it.”
由第六段中“... some of the burnt skin was falling off ... A large piece suddenly came off with a sharp noise ... the round top of the cylinder was turning.”和第七段中“... the black mark jump forwards a little ... Something inside the cylinder was opening the top!”
D项与第一段中的the first falling star及第二段中的the strangest thing that ever came to the earth from outer space有关联。

根据原文第二段“I was at home at the time and writing in my study... simply thought that another meteorite had fallen.”
根据原文第六段“some of the burnt skin was falling off(a)→ A large piece suddenly came off with a sharp noise(c)→ the round top of the cylinder was turning(d)”,以及第七段“the black mark jump forwards a little(b)→ Something inside the cylinder was opening the top(e)”,正确顺序为a-c-d-b-e,对应选项A,故选A。
通读全文,A选项地震、B选项大雪、C选项暴雨均未在文中提及;结合第一段“the first falling star”和第二段“the strangest thing that ever came to the earth from outer space”,该物体与外星相关,D选项火星的闪光符合语境,故选D。
