The act of making and being a friend is as simple as it is difficult. Here are a few tips to help you make new friends as well as to take better care of the friendships you already have.
Accept the awkwardness. It's a little bit awkward to reach out to someone you don't know well—whether that's sending the first text messages or starting small talk in the elevator. 1 Otherwise you can't make any new friends.
2 Actually this advice is based on a well-known theory and some field research. Gallian Sandstorm, a senior lecturer in psychology at the university of Essex in the UK, has done research on something called the "liking gap", which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody doesn't like you very much is wrong. 3 Instead, remember that when you talk to someone else, you are actually brightening their day.
Invest in activities that you love. Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound empty, but it works. 4 Then people will be drawn to you because you will be in the right place.
Be present. The planet is warming, and there is so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if you want to keep your friendships, you have to show up for them. 5
A. So don't listen to it.
B. But you have to accept it.
C. Do the things you are crazy about.
D. You don't have to be interested in just one thing.
E. You have to listen and notice things about your friends.
F. Remember that people will like you more than you think they will.
G. We have a few tips for being present and engaged with your friends.

1. B 解析:前文“It's a little bit awkward to reach out to someone you don't know well—whether that's sending the first text messages or starting small talk in the elevator.”指出表示对不太熟悉的人感兴趣会面临尴尬,后文“Otherwise you can't make any new friends.”提到不做某事的负面结果,B选项“But you have to accept it.”
后文“Actually this advice is based on a well-known theory and some field research. Gallian Sandstorm, a senior lecturer in psychology at the university of Essex in the UK, has done research on something called the 'liking gap', which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody doesn't like you very much is wrong.” F选项“Remember that people will like you more than you think they will.”
3. A 解析:前文“Gallian Sandstorm, a senior lecturer in psychology at the university of Essex in the UK, has done research on something called the 'liking gap', which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody doesn't like you very much is wrong.”指出不受他人喜爱的自我认知可能是错误的;后文“Instead, remember that when you talk to someone else, you are actually brightening their day.” A选项“So don't listen to it.” 故选A。
4. C 解析:前文“Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound empty, but it works.”提到尝试新的爱好有助于交友,后文“Then people will be drawn to you because you will be in the right place.” C选项“Do the things you are crazy about.”
5. E 解析:前文“But if you want to keep your friendships, you have to show up for them.”指出维持友谊需要出现在朋友身边,E选项“You have to listen and notice things about your friends.”

1.B 2.D 3.A 4.C 5.D 6.C 7.A 8.B 9.C 10.B 11.D 12.B 13.C 14.A 15.D
1. B 解析:根据下文“because I'd never seen geese there before”可知,作者之前从未见过大雁,因此这是一个“惊喜”。故选B。
3. A 解析:根据上文“One autumn morning, I spotted a pair of wild geese on our pond.” 故选A。
4. C 解析:根据上文“I hid behind some trees”以及下文“I was surprised to see they were staring at me, too!”
故选A。
8. B 解析:根据下文“the male had a damaged left wing and his faithful mate wouldn't leave him behind”可知,雄鸟的左翅膀受伤了,这是它们停留在此的原因。
9. C 解析:分析语境可知,此处“a 9 wing”应是呼应上文的“a damaged left wing”,broken与damaged同义表达。故选C。
10. B 解析:根据下文“some movement from the corner of my eye”可推知,此处指作者余光看到大雁有动作,即“瞥见动静”,此处用catch。故选B。
11. D 解析:根据主语“Their wings”、空后“struggling for take-off”以及常识可知,大雁起飞时会拍打翅膀。
12. B 解析:根据上文“Gradually they flew over the pond and circled back towards me as if to say goodbye.” out of one's sight意为“看不见,离开某人的视线”。故选B。
13. C 解析:根据上文“The season's first snowflakes fell the very next day.”
14. A 解析:根据上文“because I'd never seen geese there before”可推知,作者应是之前从未见过大雁停留在自家池塘,因此,它们的逗留是出乎意料的。故选A。
15. D 解析:结合语境可知,此处“each other”指代“大雁彼此”,同时根据上文“the male had a damaged left wing and his faithful mate wouldn't leave him behind”可推知,作者此处感慨雌雁对受伤雄雁不离不弃,这是忠诚与挚爱。故选D。
