[2026 原创] When the Canadian composer Christian Thomas first heard Liu Fang play the pipa in Montreal, he was deeply moved. The pipa is a traditional Chinese four-stringed lute with a history of more than 2,000 years. In Liu Fang’s hands, its sound was expressive, gentle, and full of emotion. Christian felt he had discovered something magical, and at that moment, he decided to write a concerto（协奏曲）for her.
Liu Fang is one of the world’s greatest pipa players. She began practising at age six, spending hours every day with the instrument. Her playing looks effortless, as if the pipa were a part of her body. Christian later said that when she performs, she “dances a ballet with her hands”.
