Pick up rubbish, get gifts
Have you ever heard of the three Rs—“Reduce, reuse, recycle(减量化,再利用,再循环)”? They help cut down on the amount of rubbish we throw away. Many places are trying creative ways to put this idea into practice. In 2024, a special activity started at the Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring Scenic Area(鸣沙山月牙泉风景名胜区) in Dunhuang, Gansu Province.
The scenic area had an activity called “Exchange rubbish for gifts”. How did it work? Visitors could get a rubbish bag from the workers, pick up the rubbish around the area, and then exchange the rubbish for small gifts such as key chains(钥匙链) and fridge magnets(冰箱贴).
Mr Wang, a cleaner, felt happy to see a lot of visitors helping pick up rubbish. “This helps my work a lot,” he said.
Mrs Yang was a visitor from Tianjin. She had a great time with her child there. Her child was excited to pick up rubbish for gifts. She thought the activity was meaningful. “It teaches children that they shouldn’t throw rubbish everywhere. Rubbish should be put in the right place. Everyone should take action(采取行动) to protect the environment(环境),” she said.
The activity began at 8:30 p.m. every day, and one hour later, visitors could exchange gifts. It would last(持续) till mid-October.
