Passage 1
Education is not an end, but a way to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the
of educating them; our purpose is to fit them for life. As soon as we realize this fact, we will understand that it is very important to choose a good way of education which will really
children for life.
In many modern countries it has been fashionable for some time to think that by free education for all—whether they are rich or poor, clever or stupid, one can solve all the problems of society and
a perfect nation. But we can already see that
education for all is not enough. The number of jobs is smaller than that of people with university degrees. Some people with high degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work. Working with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries,
they give up choosing these jobs. They even have no work to do.
But we have to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is more important than that of a professor in some ways. We can live without
but we will die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we would get terrible diseases in our towns. In some countries there are no servants because
is willing to do such work. So the professors have to waste their time
housework as well.
Actually, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we
be educated in such a way that—firstly, each of us can do whatever job is suitable for our brain and ability, and secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be unwilling to do one's work, or to laugh at someone else's. Only such a type of education can be called
to society. We need to accept the needs of society as soon as possible.

答案

Passage 1
1. A 【解析】根据后面的“our purpose is to fit them for life”可知,此处指的是教育孩子的目的(purpose)。
2. D 3. B 4. C
6. C 【解析】根据前句“But we have to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is more important than that of a professor in some ways.”
7. B 8. D
9. C 【解析】根据空前的“when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life”可知,此处与之对应,表示我们都必须(must)接受这样的教育以适应生活。
10. A 【解析】根据上文中“firstly, each of us can do whatever job is suitable for our brain and ability... or to laugh at someone else's”可知,只有这样的教育才能被称为是对社会有价值的(valuable)教育。

1. A:根据后文“our purpose is to fit them for life”,此处指教育孩子的目的,故选A。
4. C:前文提到“free education for all”,此处对应指全民免费教育,故选C。
9. C:对应前文“all of us must be educated to fit us for life”,此处用must保持语义一致,故选C。
