B
Robert van Gulik was a famous language expert. He was born in the Netherlands in 1910. When he was a middle school student, the characters on a vase in his home made him interested in Chinese culture.
In 1930, Robert went to university and chose to study Chinese culture and language. Later, he learned to play the guqin (a traditional Chinese instrument), practised Chinese calligraphy, and even took a Chinese name — Gao Luopei. He loved everything about China.
One day, while working in Chongqing in the 1940s, Robert found an old Chinese detective novel in a small book shop. It was about Di Renjie, a famous detective in ancient China. Robert was deeply attracted by the story. He decided to translate(翻译) it into English. During the translation, he compared Western detective novels with Chinese detective stories. He decided to write his own after finishing the translation.
Robert spent 15 years writing Judge Dee Mysteries(《大唐狄公案》). He wrote 16 long stories and 8 short ones in total. In his books, he mixed Chinese storytelling with Western detective skills. Many people around the world fell in love with Judge Dee. They called him “the Chinese Sherlock Holmes”.
Thanks to Robert van Gulik, a great Chinese hero became famous all over the world.
