Surprisingly, at the 2025 World Aquatics
Masters Championships in Singapore, Zhan
won one gold, two silvers and one bronze in the
80—84 age group. About 6,000 athletes运动

part in the competition.
Born in 1943 in a riverside village in
southeast China, Zhan built an early connection
to water. When she was a teenager, she had to
take care of her younger brothers and sisters.
She would take them to the riverbank to bath
and wash clothes. She also taught herself to

A school coach found she was good at
swimming when she was 15 years old. Without
even having a proper swimsuit, Zhan joined the
training team. At the age of 17, she became the
youngest member of China's national swimming

Coaches and teammates called her a "butterfly
genius天才", but her bright future was cut
short by back and leg injuries受伤.
After leaving competitive swimming, Zhan
became a successful coach. At 72, she stepped
down from coaching but never left the pool.
She swims daily. "As a coach, I had little time
for my own swimming. After stepping down
from working, I found the joy of being in the
water again," she said.
To prepare for the competition, her eight-
year-old granddaughter trained alongside her
daily. "Grandma trains really hard and swims
longer than before," the girl said.
"After more than 60 years, I finally stood
on the top podium领奖台. It is the best
feeling ever in my life," Zhan said, thinking
back to her winning moment.
