The Cliff Village’s Great Change
Have you ever imagined children climbing dangerous ladders every day just to get to school? Atulie’er Village(悬崖村), a small mountain village in Sichuan Province, was once one of the poorest places in China.
The village was built on a high cliff. In the past, there were no wide roads connecting it to the outside world. The only way to leave was to climb 800 meters of rattan ladders(藤梯) made of sticks and vines. Children used to risk their lives to go to school, while farmers could hardly sell their fresh fruits and vegetables. Many young people left their hometown, because they could not see any hope. Life there was really difficult.
Thanks to China’s rural revitalization policy(乡村振兴政策), great changes have taken place. In 2016, safe steel ladders replaced the old rattan ones. Then in 2020, all villagers moved into bright new houses in the county town. The old village has become a popular tour-ist attraction. Local people also sell their products online. More and more young people are coming back to work in their hometown. Their living conditions have improved greatly.
This amazing story shows that no place is too far to be changed. Rural revitalization is making China’s countryside more beautiful and people’s lives happier. Everyone can play a part in building a better hometown.

I also hope that more characteristic local industries can be developed, so that villagers can have more stable and well-paid job opportunities at home. In addition, I wish the rural ecological environment can be kept more beautiful, and the rich local traditional culture can be better inherited and developed, making the countryside a more comfortable and attractive home for everyone.
