B
Suddenly, Mr Stapleton excused himself and ran off, running after a butterfly. Dr Watson watched him run into the Grimpen Mire, leaping from one safe place to another. Then Dr Watson heard footsteps and saw a woman come along the path towards him. He guessed that it was Mr Stapleton's sister, although she didn't look like him at all. She was tall and dark and very beautiful.
Before Dr Watson could say anything to her, she said in a low voice, "Go back! Go Straight back to London, immediately."
He stared at her in surprise, "Why should I go back?"
"I cannot explain, but please go back, and never set foot upon the moor again."
"But I have only just come."
"The warning is for your own good. Go back to London. I tell you, tonight. Quiet! My brother is coming. Don't tell him what I said."
Mr Stapleton had lost his butterfly and came back to us. "Hello, Berly," he said in an unfriendly tone.
"Hello, Jack. You are hot," she replied.
"Chasing a butterfly," he explained. "Missed him."
"I was just talking to Sir Henry about the butterflies of the moor," she said.
Then Mr Stapleton invited Dr Watson to Merripit House and talked a lot about his own experiences. They asked Dr Watson to stay for lunch but he declined and set out for Baskerville along the path. However, there must have been a short cut because he found Miss Stapleton on the road ahead of me. "I'm sorry I thought you were Sir Henry," she said. "Please forget what I said."
"I cannot forget it because I am Sir Henry's friend, and I'm worried about him. Why did you want him to go back to London? Tell me what you meant, and I will pass on your warning to Sir Henry," Dr Watson said.
