his summer, 18-year-old Uygur girl Aydina
Yasen was very happy. She got a letter from
a music college. It offered her a chance to
further study the konghou, an ancient Chinese musical
instrument.

It is said that the harp-
like konghou came to China
through the Xinjiang Uygur
Autonomous Region during
the time of the ancient Silk
Road. It was popular in the
Tang Dynasty.
Aydina Yasen grew
up in Qiemo county, in the Taklamakan Desert, China's
largest desert. *Known as the "hometown of konghou",
this county was an important place on the ancient Silk
Road and has unearthed the oldest known relics
of the instrument, dating back 2,700 years.
Aydina Yasen began learning to play the konghou
at the age of 10. "The first time I heard its sound, I fell
in love with it," she said. "It feels like I am touching an
ancient soul."
There was a time when the konghou had almost
disappeared. However, efforts to replicate the
instrument began in the 1930s, and it returned to the stage
by the 1980s.
In 2016, Qiemo started a free konghou training
center. Many teachers and students came. Now, over 200
children are learning it. They are called "konghou kids".
And all primary and secondary schools in Qiemo have
konghou clubs.
Aydina is the first from Qiemo to go to college
for learning konghou in recent years. She studies at
the Shenyang Conservatory of Music now. "Learning
konghou was never easy. I hope to share the rich konghou
culture of my hometown with more people," she said.
