(时文) During the Spring Festival, Spring Festival couplets(对联) will be put up on both sides of the main door. They are used to bring good luck in the coming new year.
The custom(习俗) of writing the couplets started in the Tang Dynasty, and became popular in the Song Dynasty. The official name of the couplets came from Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Later, writing the couplets became an art, and every family tried it.
To make Spring Festival couplets, we usually need four steps. We first need to prepare some things, such as red paper. Then we think about the words with best wishes. Sometimes everyone in the family comes to give ideas. The third step is to write the words. The last step is to put up the couplets.
It is common to hang the character "Fu" during the Spring Festival. Some people even turn the "Fu" upside down(翻转) while putting it up. In traditional Chinese customs, it means that good luck has already arrived.
