Dayu, or Great Yu, is a big name in China. He stopped big floods(洪水) in the Yellow River and started the Xia Dynasty.
On March 18, the cartoon Shan Hai Chuan Qi started on CCTV-1. It tells the story of young Dayu and brings to life over 400 characters from The Classic of Mountains and Seas (《山海经》).
For the show's team, a big problem was to pick which character from the book to be the main one in the series. The director(导演) of the show, Cao Liang, said they thought about characters like Houyi and Kuafu. But they finally chose Dayu because many tales and records suggest(表明) that he was a real historical person, and he had a big influence(影响力) on ancient China.
In the show, Dayu seems more like a young boy of today than a person from the ancient past. He is lively and innocent(天真的). After his father died, Dayu lived a hard life. Characters like Xingtian and Taowu were mean to him. But Dayu grew to be brave, and with the help of Zhulong, turned into a hero in the end.
“As a human hero, Dayu might be more easygoing(易亲近的) to us, especially young people,” Cao told China Daily.
