C
Many people often complain about having a poor memory, especially as they grow older. Wouldn't life be much easier if we could remember everything without effort? So, how can we improve our memory?
Many people think that repeating things is the best way to remember them. This of course helps short-term memory, like remembering a telephone number for a few seconds, but psychologists(心理学家) doubt whether it can help you to remember things for very long. The British psychologist E. C. Stanford seemed to prove this point when he tested himself on five prayers(祈祷文). He read them aloud every morning for the past 25 years. He found that he could remember no more than three words for some of them!
A more helpful technique, especially for remembering numbers, is grouping the information. For example, remembering 1492178919931848 seems almost impossible at first glance for most of us. But if you break them into chunks, it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1993 1848.
Experts suggest several memory training methods. One method for learning foreign languages is to create a picture in your mind connected to the word. Another method is to invent a story that includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people remembered around 90% of up to 120 words when they used the method of storytelling.
When it comes to studying a large number of information, psychologists recommend asking yourself a lot of questions about what you read. For instance, if you were studying a particular disease, you would ask yourself questions like: "Is it spread through water?" "What body parts does it affect?" and so on. This is said to be far more effective than time spent "passively" reading and re-reading notes.

解析

【分析】
本题为关于提高记忆力的阅读理解题,4道小题分别考查细节理解、词义猜测、细节理解、推理判断。解题思路如下:
1. 第9题:定位题干中“E.C. Stanford”,找到第二段相关内容,分析实验结论与选项的匹配度;
2. 第10题:根据第三段“grouping the information”的语境,推断“chunks”的含义;
3. 第11题:定位题干“learning foreign vocabulary”,找到第四段对应的记忆方法;
11. 第四段明确指出学习外语的方法是“create a picture in your mind connected to the word”,对应C选项,A、B、D均未提及,故选C。
12. 第五段提到“asking yourself a lot of questions... is far more effective than passively reading”,可推断问问题有助于提高记忆力,对应D选项;A项未提及数学,B项与祈祷无关,C项与原文“长数字难记”矛盾,故选D。
