Cutting Up an Ox
One day, a cook was invited to cut up an ox for King Wenhui. He was so skilled that he cut an ox with fluency and accuracy. King Wenhui kept applauding all the time and asked, “Wonderful! How can you be so good at it?”
The cook replied, “I like to explore the laws of everything in the world. Let me tell you my story that happened just now. When I first saw the ox, it was just a huge thing. After three years’ practising, I get to know everything about an ox. I don’t have to watch it carefully. I only have some feelings in my heart. I know where I should start and where I have to stop. I know when I should go on with my work and when I would wait a moment. I do my work as if I am going about a town that I know very well.”
King Wenhui said, “I have learned so much things from you. If I keep practising, I will become an expert someday.”
