Wang Xizhi (303—361) was a renowned Chinese calligrapher from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317—420). He is the only calligrapher in Chinese history to be honoured with the title “Sage of Calligraphy”(书圣).
Born in Linyi, Shandong Province, Wang spent most of his life in what is now Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He learned calligraphy from Lady Wei Shuo, who recognized his talent early on. Wang practised extremely hard, even when he thought he wasn't making progress. Legend has it that Lady Wei once pointed to a bud and asked him if he could pinch it—meaning that skills require patience and time to develop.
Wang's most famous work is the Lanting Xu (兰亭序) or Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion. This masterpiece was created during a gathering of poets and scholars. The story goes that after drinking wine, Wang wrote this preface in a state of inspiration. His writing was so beautiful and natural that it seemed as if the brush was dancing on the paper.
Lanting Xu is considered the greatest example of running script(行书) in the world. It's admired for its grace, fluidity, and perfect balance between structure and spontaneity.
Wang's calligraphy is characterized by:
Graceful and flowing strokes that seem effortless
Perfect harmony between different parts of each character
A sense of energy and life within the written forms
His influence on Chinese calligraphy is comparable to William Shakespeare's impact on English literature. His work has been studied and imitated by countless calligraphers for over 1,600 years. His techniques and style became the foundation for many later calligraphic schools.
What can we learn from this great master? His life teaches us that true excellence comes from dedication and practice. As the old Chinese saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”(熟能生巧). Wang Xizhi showed that with enough perseverance, one can achieve greatness in any field.
