Chinese people use twelve animals to name the year of a person's birth. Do you know why? One of the folk stories goes like this:
A long time ago, people didn't know their birth years and could not remember their ages. The Jade Emperor then wanted to choose twelve animals as the Chinese zodiac, one animal for each year. What would he do? He asked all the animals to join a race. The first twelve animals won the race. These animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Now every Chinese person is connected to a zodiac animal.

In the US, Grandparents Day falls on the first Sunday after Labour Day (the first Monday of September). It was not created to sell cards or flowers. The holiday came from a strong-minded woman named Marian McQuade.
As a little girl, Marian visited her grandma on a farm. After housework, she and her grandma visited old neighbours with food and small presents. These days and her love for her grandma made her want to help old people all her life.
When she grew up, she married and raised a big family with children and grandchildren. She thought it meaningful for families to stay with their grandparents, so she hoped to set up a special holiday for family get-togethers. In the early 1970s, she began working towards this goal.
She made calls and wrote letters to government leaders for years. In 1973, a senator noticed her idea and put forward a bill in the Senate, but it failed. Marian never gave up. Finally on 3rd August, 1978, the US President turned Grandparents Day into a national holiday. He said people should respect grandparents and value family love.
The holiday has spread worldwide. Different countries have different dates: Germany celebrates it on the second Sunday of October, while Mexico uses 28th August. Kids there cook nice food or buy gifts for their grandparents.
