Chinese soldier became a hero after
jumping into a lake five times to save five
people. Netizens praised him online for his
brave act.
On June 6, 36-year-old Zhang Wei was walking with
his mom by a lake in Henan. He was on leave from the
army. Suddenly, he heard

people shouting for help.
He ran to the place and saw
two people struggling in the
water. And three others who tried to help had fallen into
the water too.
Zhang jumped into the water right away. He swam
to a woman first. *She was so scared that she made it
hard for him to save her, and he got very tired. But after
pulling her to safety, he went back into the water without
having a rest.
“It felt like a 100-meter race against time,” Zhang
said later. After saving four people, his mom saw he was
weak and out of breath. She tried to stop him from saving
the last man, but Zhang kneeled down and said, “I’m
okay. Let me save one more.”
After saving the fifth person, Zhang collapsed and
was taken to the hospital. He got better and left on
Tuesday. The five people visited him to say thanks.
“I’m a soldier. Protecting people is my job,” Zhang
said. He has been in the army since 2006. The local
government gave him 50,000 yuan for his bravery.
