Everyone knows that sleep is important for our health, but do you know that it can also help us learn a new language? A study found that brain activity during sleep can improve our memories.
In the study, 35 English speakers learnt a language called Mini Pinyin. 17 About half of those people learnt the language in the morning. They stayed awake and had a test later that day. The others learnt in the evening and then went to sleep in a lab. They were tested the next morning. 18
When we sleep, our brain goes through different phases (阶段). One of these is called REM sleep. 19 During this time, brain activity is very high and we often dream.
Another sleep phase is non-REM sleep, when brain activity is much lower. 20 This is due to (由于) two kinds of brain waves. They can move new information from the short-term memory part of the brain to the long-term memory part.
Scott Cousens worked on the study. He said the results showed sleep plays a key role in remembering complex information, such as a new language. 21 "Sleep is not just for us to have a rest. It's an important time for the brain to change and grow," he said.
So, if you want to improve your English skills, the secret might be going to bed!
