Tuesday/Week 12
new study has found that people are not
good at understanding how dogs are
feeling. Researchers at Arizona State
University made videos of a dog in different situations.
Some were good experiences for the dog. For example,
someone gave it a treat.

Some were bad. For
example, the dog saw a
scary vacuum cleaner(真空吸尘器).
Then the researchers edited some videos. In these
videos, they changed the background (背景). For
example, a video showed the dog looking happy, but the
background was a vacuum, not a treat. The researchers
showed all the videos to people and asked, "How happy
was the dog?"
People saw the same dog doing the same thing, but
they thought different things about it. *If the background
looked good, they thought the dog was happy. If the
background looked bad, they thought the dog was
unhappy. This happened even when the dog's body
language showed the opposite feelings.
The researcher Holly said, "People don't judge (判断)
a dog's feelings by what the dog was doing, but by what
was happening around the dog. To really understand your
pet's feelings and be closer to it, focus on your dog's body
language."
