Many “streets” in Venice are made of water. That’s why people there move through the city in small boats.
Those flat-bottomed small boats are called gondolas. People have used gondolas to move through Venice’s canals(水道) for hundreds of years. Gondola drivers power the boats by hand.

They row the boats along the canals with long oars(桨).
Gondolas were once the main means of transportation(交通工具) in Venice. At one point, there were about 10,000 gondolas in the city. Nowadays, that number has fallen to fewer than 500.
Gondolas are now mainly used by tourists. The earliest gondolas had small cabins(船舱). That protected riders from bad weather. Today’s gondolas are open to the air. This enables tourists to have a better view of the city.
Would you like to ride through Venice on a gondola? Experiencing Venice can be quite an adventure. Just watch your step; you don’t want to fall overboard!
Gondolas have a special decoration on their fronts. What is that?
It is called the férro, which means “iron”. In addition to being decorative, it also acts as a counterweight(平衡物) to the gondola driver who stands in the back of the boat.
