Two strong earthquakes took place in Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6th. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the biggest earthquake had a magnitude(震级)of 7.8. It was the strongest earthquake in that area in over 80 years.
The earth's surface has many plates(板块). These plates are always moving. When two plates move past each other, there is an earthquake.
During the quake this time, the Anatolian and Arabian plates moved against each other. Usually, these two plates move at about 15 millimetres every year toward each other. But this time, the two plates slid(滑)3 to 3.5 metres past each other. Unluckily, Turkey and Syria lie in the area where the two plates meet.
Earthquakes can happen from near earth's surface to about 700 kilometres deep. The shallower(浅的)the quake, the stronger it is. During the quake in Turkey and Syria, the depth was about 18 kilometres. This is very close to the surface. That's why it caused huge damage(破坏).
There are about 20 active plates on earth. They move and cause earthquakes. Most earthquakes happen on the plate boundaries(边界). About 96 percent of Turkey's land lies on the plate boundaries. That's why the country has earthquakes very often. From 1900 to 2020, it had more than 10 earthquakes stronger than magnitude 7.0.
