In a place surrounded by green trees in Nanjing, there stands a beautiful building, commemorating(纪念) one of the greatest poets in the Southern Song Dynasty.
Fan Chengda was born on June 26th, 1126. From a young age, he enjoyed reading all kinds of books so much that he began writing poems at the age of 14. However, his parents died not long after, leaving the family getting poor. Fan Chengda tried his best to look after his two younger sisters while going on with his studies. Before he was 20 years old, he became an official of Zhejiang Province.
He did many good things for the people. When he saw people who worked hard but still couldn’t get enough food, he taught them better skills of farming. He built bridges over the wide rivers to help people cross the rivers more easily. When he worked in Guilin, Guangxi, he found that floods often hit the city. He studied a lot about the mountains and rivers there and then led officials and people to clear the waterways. Finally, they stopped the floods and all people were safe. That brought him lots of praise and respect. Wherever he was, he never forgot his duty. When he worked in Sichuan Province, he led the army to protect the country.
Though he had heavy and difficult work every day, he never stopped writing poems. During his life, he wrote nearly two thousand poems. Many of them were very popular. His poetry not only depicted the beauty of the countryside and busy farming life, but also reflected his family and friends.
