Lantern-making is a craft（工艺）with a history of thousands of years. But now, not many people really know how to make palace lanterns（宫灯）by hand.
In Wangshouzhuang Village, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, 62-year-old lantern maker Feng Huailin still works with traditional（传统的）lantern-making skills.
His family have known the skills ever since the Qing Dynasty. It takes nearly 300 wood components（部件）to make a set of palace lanterns. Feng usually works on one set for over a month. Large sets take three months.
When Feng was a child, both his father and grandfather made the lanterns. Although Feng was good at making wooden things and drawing, he didn't think about becoming a lantern maker. But the birth of his child in 1987 changed his mind. "I wanted to make a set of lanterns for my child," Feng says. "It has been a tradition to give a set of palace lanterns to newborn babies as a gift. The lanterns show the family's best wishes to the babies."
It took Feng more than two months to finish the first palace lanterns. Feng still remembers how cold the night was when he forgot about time while making the lanterns.
