Jacques Cousteau was a famous French ocean explorer. He was born in 1910. When he was young, he loved the sea and making machines. But he didn't like school and made some trouble. So his parents sent him to a boarding school. There, he studied hard and did much better. Later, he entered the French Naval Academy(海军学院).
In the navy, Cousteau started to dive. At that time, divers couldn't stay underwater for long. Cousteau wanted to change this. He worked with an engineer. They tried many times and finally invented the aqualung in 1943. This amazing invention let divers stay underwater for a long time. It was a big help for ocean exploration.
After that, Cousteau kept diving. He also took his camera to take pictures of the beautiful things in the ocean, like colorful fish and big whales. ▲ People all over the world could see the wonderful underwater world through his films.
Cousteau also cared about the ocean environment. In 1974, he started the Cousteau Society. The society wanted to protect the oceans. Jacques Cousteau died in 1997, but people still remember his great love for the ocean and his important work.
