With its summit (highest point) standing at an unbelievable height of 29,032 feet, Mount Qomolangma is the world's highest mountain above sea level. Now it's getting even taller, thanks to a growth spurt caused by a nearby river, according to a new study.
Mount Qomolangma sits on the border of Nepal and China in the Himalayan mountain range. The huge landmark is already about 800 feet taller than the other mountains in the area and continues to grow every year by about 0.08 inches. It might not seem like much, but it adds up over time.
A team of scientists set out to understand how Mount Qomolangma got so tall in the first place and what causes its ongoing growth. Using computer modeling, they studied how the waterways in the area had changed. They found that the Arun River plays an especially important role in Mount Qomolangma's development.
About 89,000 years ago, as the team found, a huge river system called the Kosi River merged with the Arun River and formed one large waterway. The huge, powerful river slowly eroded billions of tons of rock and soil, creating a deep way called a gorge.
Over time, as the erosion continued and the matter that makes up the land was carried away, the earth's crust became lighter in that area. The lighter crust stayed more easily on top of the earth's mantle, allowing the cover to push the crust upward and causing Mount Qomolangma to grow. The Arun River has made Mount Qomolangma between 49 and 164 feet taller than it would otherwise be.
Adam Smith, one of the study's writers, said, "It's a bit like throwing a lot of cargo off a ship. The ship becomes lighter and so stays a little higher. Similarly, when the crust becomes lighter, it can stay a little higher." Just as the mountain has gotten taller, however, it could also get shorter, according to the research team.
