(江苏连云港期末)Look! With a hat made of solar panels, a robot is walking through many Longjing tea plants. The smart robot is a helper for local tea planters during the tea-picking season.
As one of China’s 10 most famous teas, Longjing tea is known for its green colour, nice taste and beautiful shape. People always pick it by hand, but local tea gardens often don’t have enough workers. So a team from Zhejiang Sci-Tech University started making tea-picking.
The robot has got better and better over the years. In 2023, the first one used solar power—it could find 86% of tea buds and pick over 60% of them successfully. In 2024, the second robot worked 50% faster. It took the place of 1.5 workers and picked 750 grams of dry tea every day. By 2025, the third robot had four robot legs. It moved easily on hills, found 90% of tea buds, and replaced 2 good workers.
The robot solves the worker shortage problem. It works 24 hours non-stop and doesn’t damage tea leaves. But it still faces some problems: it can’t spot curled buds well, works more slowly on rainy days, and is too expensive for small tea farmers.
Now the robot is still on its way to the best. The team plans to help it spot buds better and work in more types of tea gardens. In the future, it will become an even more perfect helper for tea planters.
