Zhou Lei is a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural（农业的）Sciences. He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal. He has also made great progress in the improvement of rice varieties over the years. So far he has bred（培育）16 new kinds of rice, increasing grain（粮食）production by more than 1.5 billion kilograms. Zhou has been offered chances to go abroad and exchange experience with others. After returning to China, Zhou began using his skills to help the country with agriculture.
Instead of staying in an air-conditioned office, Zhou spent most of his time in the field. Breeding rice is hard because it's greatly affected by sunlight and temperature. So Zhou always took care of his crops day and night.
Things don't always go well. In August, southern China had very high temperatures. This had a serious influence on the crops in Zhou's field. However, Zhou never got downhearted.
He thought this gave him a chance to do more research. He said, "Sometimes we just need to find ways to deal with high temperatures, and this also helps us choose the right rice."
After trying tens of thousands of times, Zhou and his team successfully created new kinds of rice to meet the needs of people.
