When Mother arrived with the village policeman later that evening, the building was empty. The broken chain lay on the floor like a dead snake, and the only signs left were footprints. But Bobbie noticed something shiny in the dirt, a gold button with a special design.
That night, Bobbie heard the familiar whistle of the 11:15 train passing by. But tonight it sounded different—two short calls instead of one. The train's yellow lights went through the darkness like fireflies running along the railway.
