Sabine Scurfield spent most of her childhood living in New York City until she moved to Toronto, when she was in Grade 4.
Of course, starting fresh in a new country was very hard. “On the first day of school, I was so nervous that I just stood looking down at my shoes and did not talk. I felt like I did not belong there,” she said.
Thankfully, someone was kind enough to step in. It was then that she realised how powerful it can be to make a friend when you’re the newcomer. “A girl came up to me, smiled, and put her arm around me and started talking with me. It made my day. From then on, we were best friends,” she said.
But making friends isn’t always that easy.
