Niger, in central Africa, is a country that has very little rain. And 80% of people have no running water at home. So water is very important in people's lives, but sometimes kids can't do well at school because they have to find water for the family.
It's hard for the children to study. They go out on donkeys(驴)and travel about ten kilometres to get water. And then they are late for school, or they don't go at all. Sani, 11, gets water for his family in the morning and usually gets to school at 10 o'clock—two hours late. “Some of the other children are lucky,” he says. “They don't have to get water. And so they learn more quickly than me.”
One girl, Badjeba, says, “I get up at 4:30 to get water, five kilometres away. Then I take it home. Then I walk to school. I'm so exhausted that I get to sleep in class. And after school, I have to go and find water again.”
In one classroom, the teacher Dalia asks, “How many of you are often late because you have to get water?” And about 90% of the kids put their hands up. Their families ask them to get water—school is important, but water is life.

The next day would be Picture Day. Poppy smiled at herself in the mirror(镜子). She was trying on her new dress. It looked perfect. Her picture would be in the yearbook forever.
In the kitchen, Poppy put some juice on the front of her dress. “I'll wash it,” her mum said. “Now get changed. We're going to the eye doctor.”
At the doctor's office, Poppy worried about her dress. Suddenly she heard the doctor say, “Your glasses are ready.” Poppy didn't want glasses. She hoped she wouldn't have to wear them for Picture Day.
The next morning, Poppy put on her new dress, but it was small and short. “Oh, no!” she cried. “My dress became smaller in the wash!” She ran to get an older dress.
Waiting with her classmates, Poppy played with her glasses. Beside her, Raul said, “You're lucky. Your parents didn't make you get a haircut.” “And you can still smile!” Lei said. She had a few missing teeth. Rosa had a bandage(创可贴) across her nose. Evan's arm was in a cast(石膏固定). “I guess we all have something we don't like about our looks. No one is perfect,” Poppy said.
“You're up, second graders,” the photographer(摄影师)called. Poppy thought about taking off her glasses. Then the photographer smiled at her and said, “Nice glasses!” Poppy smiled back and looked at her classmate. They couldn't move away a bad haircut or a broken arm. They all had their difference. That's what made them unusual. Poppy left her glasses on.
“Cheese!” the class called out.
“Perfect!” the photographer said.
Picture Day didn't go the way Poppy had planned. It was even better.

Poppy thought about taking off her glasses. Then the photographer smiled at her and said, "Nice glasses!" Poppy smiled back and looked at her classmate. They couldn't move away a bad haircut or a broken arm. They all had their difference. That's what made them unusual. Poppy left her glasses on.(波比想摘下眼镜。
