I（Robinson）showed him a pallet（草垫子）and a blanket and he fell asleep quickly. When waking up in the morning, he greeted me, down on his knees, with hands on his head. At first, we communicated primarily by body language. Soon my new servant showed him much better at learning my language than I was at learning his. I studied him, and soon he could say his name, “Master” “Yes” and “No”, and the names of various items. How good it was to hear a man's voice again!
It took Friday time to grow used to the idea of hunting with a gun. I had to shoot several animals and birds before he stopped running away. For the next three years, I taught Friday how to use all my tools. Friday was quick to help with the farming and feeding. He worked hard and was obedient（忠顺的）.
One day, I took Friday to the highest point of the island where all the nearby islands could be seen. Suddenly, Friday began to jump up and down. He seemed quite excited with the sight（看见）of his own country. I began to think again about escape. Perhaps together we could leave for his country. But what then? Would Friday still be my friend, or would his people kill me and eat me? I took Friday to the other side of the island and showed him my big canoe, though it was quite old. “Could you imagine sailing to your country on it, Friday? Can it be a success?” I asked him. “Oh, yes,” he answered. “It can carry a lot of food and drinks.”
But a moment later, Friday looked very upset. “Are you angry with me?” he asked. “What have I done? Why do you want to send me away?”
“But I thought you wanted to go home,” I said.
“Yes. But you must come with me. Kill me if you want, but don't send me away from you!” He insisted that he would not leave me.
