In July 2025, Xu Congxiang, a 72-year-old farmer from Anhui Province, received China's great "Role Model of the Era" prize. He got this honor for his lifelong devotion to agricultural(农业的) work. Known as the "Father of High-Yield Wheat", Xu has spent over 50 years turning poor farmland into fields with good wheat harvests through science and perseverance.
Born into a family that struggled with food shortages, Xu gave up his dream of becoming a teacher in 1972 to return to his hometown as a farmer. With a passion for science, he spent nights studying agricultural books under weak lights and tried new ways to improve soil. His breakthrough came in the 1980s when he developed "soil-enriching compost"(土壤改良堆肥) using straw and ash, increasing wheat yields(产量) by 40% in his village.
