Collecting is one of people's hobbies and people collect things for different reasons.
Some people collect because they want to make money. We call them business collectors. This could be called an instrumental (工具性) reason for collecting. They'll look for antiques (古董; 古玩) that they can buy cheaply and sell at a higher price. But there may be a psychological thought too—buying cheap and selling dear can give the collector a sense of achievement.
Another reason for collecting is the desire (渴望) to find something special, such as an early recording by a famous singer. Some may spend their whole lives looking for this. There is a danger, though, that if one is lucky enough to find what he is looking for, he may feel empty, because the goal that drove him on has gone.

In the 19th century, many collectors collected fossils (化石), animals and plants from around the world and their collections provided much information about the natural world. Without those collections, our understanding of the world would be far behind what it is.
