Mao Yisheng, born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu in 1896, is the father of modern Chinese bridges. He designed two of the most famous modern bridges in China,the Qiantang River Bridge near Hangzhou, and the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge.
When Mao was eight, there was a dragon boat race in Nanjing. The race had to pass through the arches(拱门) of the Wen De Bridge. Mao was ill that day, so he didn’t go. The bridge was crowded with people and it collapsed(坍塌). Many people were hurt or dead. The news shocked Mao. He decided to build the strongest bridge. After that, his dream was to become one of the best bridge builders in China.
In 1937, Chinese people were in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. To stop the enemies(敌人), Mao bombed(炸毁) the Qiantang River Bridge which was just built. Mao wrote in his diary, “We must win a victory in the war and we must then restore the bridge. ” After the victory of the war, Mao restored the bridge. It is strong and works well as we can see now.
When Mao Yisheng saw all kinds of bridges, he would draw them down. He collected the information and data about bridges. He worked very hard. That spirit helped him realize his dream.
