What do you do with your old clothes? You might throw them away, send them or give them to people in need. No matter which way you choose, it's always you who have to decide what to do. However, California decided to push clothing companies to take care of the old clothes. As a result, the state passed the first US clothing recycling law(法律) on 28th September 2024.
This new law is expected to make less pollution. In 2021, about 1. 2 million tons of old clothes were thrown away in California. While 95% are reusable or recyclable, only 15% are actually recycled.
The law said that companies making clothes have to set up a programme to reuse, repair and recycle their goods. What's more, they would have to pay for the costs of the whole programme.
More than 150 groups, including environmental groups and some stores like Ikea, agree with the law. It would do good to the environment. It could also create over 1,000 green jobs, reported The Guardian.
As a main polluter, the fashion industry causes nearly 10% of the world's carbon emissions(碳排放), according to the United Nations. Other countries like France and the Netherlands also have laws on clothing recycling programmes. In France, for example, there are 47,000 recycling centres.
