2026年亮点给力大试卷九年级英语上册译林版第240页答案
A man was waiting in front of a store, with an unlighted cigar(雪茄) in his mouth. A policeman walked up to him and asked why he was waiting here.
The man spoke up quickly, “I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s an appointment(约定) made twenty years ago. Well, I’ll explain if you want to know. About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands.”
“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was pulled down then.”
The man struck a match(划火柴) and lit his cigar. The light showed his appearance.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” said the waiting man, “I had dinner here with my best friend Jimmy Wells. He and I grew up here in New York. We got along well with each other, just like two brothers. The next morning I was to start for the West to make money. We made a promise that night—we’d come back to this place at the same time, twenty years later. I know Jimmy will meet me here if he’s alive. He’ll never forget.”
They talked for a while and then said goodbye to each other.
About twenty minutes later, a tall man went straight to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” the tall man asked.
“Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” cried the waiting man. “It’s Bob. I knew you wouldn’t forget!”
They talked happily and went to a bright coffee shop around the corner to talk about old times, and they looked at each other when they walked in.
Bob stopped suddenly.
“You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he shouted. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change a man’s appearance completely.”
“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “Bob, you’ve been under arrest for ten minutes. Now, before we go to the station, here’s a note I was asked to give you. It’s from Jimmy Wells.”
Bob began to read the note tremblingly(颤抖地).

Bob,
I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar, I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago. But I couldn’t do it myself, so I got another policeman to do the job.
